I have been teaching and coaching at Palacios for 29 years.  I teach Algebra I and I am the varsity coach in cross country and girls track.

Algebra I Rules, Expectations, Procedures,

Rewards and Consequences Rules: 
  1. Students should be seated in their desks when the tardy bell rings. Students who are not in their seats when the tardy bell rings will be considered tardy. Students who enter the classroom after the tardy bell must have a note from the office or from another teacher. The note must be signed and dated and given to me when the student arrives in the classroom.  
  2. Students will remain in the classroom during the entire period, unless there is an emergency or they are called out of class. 
  3. Students should refrain from talking during class without specific permission from the teacher. 
  4. Food and drinks will not be consumed in the classroom. 
  5. Personal grooming will not be performed in the classroom. 
  6. Cheating will not be allowed or tolerated. Any evidence of cheating will result in a grade of “0” for the assignment. Please see the Math Department Academic Honesty Policy for further detail.

 Expectations: 

  1. Students are expected to bring a pencil, their folder, and any other necessary supplies to class everyday. 
  2. Students are expected to be respectful to everyone in the class. Disrespect will not be tolerated. 
  3. Students are expected to follow all directions. 
  4. Students are expected to complete all assignments.
  5. Students are expected to always do their best. 
  6. Students are expected to work to earn their grade. Grades are not given; they are earned.

 Procedures:                                                                                                                      

1.      Students returning to class following an absence should check with me for missed work. Students are responsible for seeking help (morning tutorials) on make-up work. Students have three (3) days after returning to class to turn in missed work. Students will receive a grade of “0” for assignments not turned in by the three-day deadline.

2.      Assignments that are late will have 10 points deducted per day until the assignment is turned in.  

3.       If students fail to turn in an assignment when it is due, they will fill out a Pink Slip explaining why they did not turn in the assignment. This documentation will be kept on file to share with administrators, parents and students during conferences. 

 Rewards: 

1.      Positive feedback from teacher to both students and parents

 

2.   Extra credit points in the form of Algebra Bucks that can be used to   

       improve daily grades, quiz grades or major test grades.

 

Consequences:  

1.      Failure to abide by these rules, expectations and procedures will result in student/teacher conferences, parent/teacher conferences or conferences with an administrator. 

2.      Students will be verbally warned if their classroom behavior is not acceptable. If this warning does not improve the situation, I will contact the student’s parent or guardian by phone or e-mail to discuss the issue. If this conference does not improve the situation, an administrator will be consulted. Students will immediately be sent to the principal’s office for any severe disruption in the classroom.

 Citizenship Grades     

        E = Excellent- The student has an excellent attitude, is very cooperative, and conforms to all school rules and regulations.    

        S = Satisfactory- The student’s behavior is generally acceptable.    

        N = Needs Improvement- The student is uncooperative and his attitude is unacceptable.  Parents must be contacted before an N is given.                             

        U = Unsatisfactory- Subject to removal.  The student is insubordinate and unwilling to conform to school rules and regulations.  The principal or assistant principal is consulted in giving this grade.  The parent has been contacted regarding behavior.  

Grading Policy/Weights

1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th Six Weeks:

  • Six Weeks Tests:  25%
  • Major Grades:  35%
  • Quiz Grades:  15%
  • Daily Grades:   25%

            3rd, 6th Six Weeks:

  •        Major Grades:  45%
  •        Quiz Grades:  20%
  •        Daily Grades:   35%

ACADEMIC HONESTY POLICY

                                                Academic Integrity 

It is the aim of the faculty of Palacios High School to foster a spirit of complete honesty and a high standard of honor. The attempt of students to present as their own work, that which they have not honestly performed is regarded by the faculty and administration as a serious offense and renders the offender liable to serious consequences.   

 Academic dishonesty is a form of cheating that occurs within an educational setting. Some definitions associated with academic dishonesty are as follows:

                                                        Cheating

Cheating includes the actual giving or receiving of any unauthorized aid or assistance or the actual giving or receiving of any unfair advantage on any form of academic work, or attempts thereof. Such acts include, but are not limited to:          The use of talking, signs, or gestures during a quiz or test         

        Copying from another student or allowing the copying of an individual               assignment

         Passing quiz or test information during a class period or from one class period to members of another class period 

         Illegally exceeding time limits on timed quizzes, tests or assignments         

Unauthorized use of study aids, notes, books, data or other information

         Use of electronic devices during an assessment

       Illegal entry to or unauthorized presence at a teacher’s computer

                                                        Stealing

Stealing includes the taking or appropriating without the right or permission to do so and with the intent to keep or make use of wrongfully, the schoolwork or materials of another student or the instructional materials of a teacher. Such acts include, but are not limited to:

         Stealing copies of quizzes or tests

         Illegitimately accessing the teacher’s answer key for quizzes or tests

         Stealing the teacher’s edition of the textbook

         Stealing another student’s homework, notes, or handouts

       Student receives a zero “0” for the assignment, parents are informed and incident is documented with administrators, teacher discretion as to resubmitting the work for credit.

 

Tutorial Expectations:

Per district policy, students whose averages fall below 70 at each three-week and six-week grade reporting period are required to come to tutorials at least once a week until the next reporting period. If the student’s average is a 70 or above at the next reporting period, the mandatory tutorials will be suspended; however, if the student’s average is below a 70 at the next reporting period, the mandatory tutorials will continue until the student earns a 70 or above for a reporting period. All other students are encouraged to attend tutorial sessions when they feel the need.

 Consequences of not attending mandatory tutorials:  

Per district policy, if students do not attend tutorials, they will be given a discipline referral.

 

Tutorial Times:      7:15 – 7:50 a.m. Daily
